Description

A recent character painting. This handsome Greek is the mate of the lady in "Splash"
Done in PSP with a mouse...one canvas...no model.
Lighting was really tricky for me. The client wanted his character warm and the background cool and the scene at night or some time when the moon would show among ruins.
It is wonderful to do that warm against cool...but then you have to imagine the light that would create that effect. So he isn't lit by moonlight. I imagined predawn light...although that is usually cool too...I have at times seen the kiss of bright predawn warm light
on someone with the dark blue behind in desert light so I made the mountains and ground look desertish (lol made up word)
Well hope it works. Hey this is fantasy...it could be a beam of light from the cosmos too.

It's very nicely done, my only tip would be this: he looks very much like he's been in a sallon for about 5 hours, like a man who's just been dressed up for a t.v series or something. Oh and you did this with a mouse? really well done, but why not get a tablet? +8

Thanks Juro.
He is royalty and suppose to be polished...
The reason I am a mouser is I can't afford a state of the the art tablet. I have tried the less expensive ones and found them lacking. I can work better with a mouse then a skippy tablet since I have years of practice with it. My mouse is me friend. Works fine. If all you do is paint and draw and if it ain't broke why fix it? Same reason I don't use photoshop...I don't use layers...I don't use special effects all I need is paint. Just an old fashion gal...what can I say. ;)

This is awsome, but....The background is all cold and blue, and he's lit up so warmly! What's up with that? +8, becuase it is still totally cool.

This is a very beutiful piece. But I agree with  Alecueous. The background is all with cold colours, it's night there. But the character is all in warm colours and has the day kind of lighting. Except for this - great work, awesome detail

Thanks for the critique. The warm on cool is client ordered. :) I explained above. Besides many things can be lighting a figure with warm light. There could be a bonfire in front of him...a beam of light from his goddess. The kiss of a desert sun rising... It is fantasy and you make up the story if you wish. I think it looks cool/different and the client was pleased. I enjoy seeing if I can make challenges work. One of the joys/challenges of character/ordered work...there is almost always something in an order that you wonder how you will make work or if you even can. Then you do the best that you can.
Oh his hands are in thin gloves...don't know if I pulled that off well enough in the reduction..larger you can see a pattern in them. Perhaps I should have made them a different color...instead of just darker...hmmm.
Thanks everyone it is always important to me to get feedback and look at my work through other eyes.
Hehe...thanks Emma. I had to think of the most handsome face I could do and give it the roguish expression. He was described as the charmer (always) personality.

Great piece of work Kay. So the customer ain't always 'right'. LOL! So what's new?

Well done on planning and executing a very difficult piece of work. Heh... it's true that fantasy plays it's own tune - and odd light artifacts are the least of it!

Very, very good! Max

Another in a long list of exquisitely done portraits. Gets better all the time.

Any way to reach you? Your website and email seem to both be down.

Yes...I am down and so upset about it. I hope that people who are looking for me come here. For some reason my site went down and I couldn't get help or an answer why...so I decided to get another Host...I did and for some reason they didn't send my webmaster the information he needed to get in....finally he got an answer and then next there was a problem with my domain name so he can't build a page until he gets an answer on that...Still sorting this mess out...meanwhile I have no email or site and I am using his site to host my pictures here. I am so sorry for this....I hope people come here. I just have no way to tell anyone I am still alive and kicking and working. Just incognito until this can be fixed. I keep praying and hoping. I can't afford another Host and another domain name. This has emptied my account trying to get it fixed and it still isn't fixed. I will be up though and back in touch somehow.

Thank you everyone for the comments and votes they mean a lot right now. Not that they don't always mean a lot....just right now they make me cry...I am so stressed over this.
Kay the basket case... :(

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I understand what it is to be without a good provider and without extensive funds to find another.

Just a suggestion, but have you considered signing up for one of those free email services (like Yahoo or Hotmail) so people can reach you until this can all get straightened out?

I personally was trying to contact you about commissioning another portrait (you've done one for me in the past), but I'd rather not post it all here. <g>

It is very annoying when service providers let you down... just had a friend who had hosting problems and his site was down for a good few months. Ironic thing is, he found me too expensive, and guess who he came back to. I'm NOT going to suggest you do the same, the US market is very different to the UK one. (At least my uplink's pretty good, I've had about 3-4 server-days downtime with them, in 7 years.)

As a hosting service myself, I can only apologise for the distress having your site go down is causing you, compounded in that it's your primary means of communication.

But (not to sound less sympathetic) this answers the question on emails to you going down a black hole. I was trying to contact you about a portrait. Not wanting to go into details, it was Wildboy & Wolf you were re-doing (updating) for me.

BTW are you still using PSP version 4? I have to admit, "upgrading" to version 7 has gained me nothing.

Oh so glad that you both came back here. I didn't want to get yahoo or some other free service because darn it this has to get fixed...I think it will be and I will be back and have email at my old kallen@realmsquest.com again. So if I have your email address (this is for everybody that sees this) I will email you and if not try the above email. I am working on getting it going as I write this.

Hi, Kay. I had commissioned you a long time ago, and I'd paid for the commission as well... I wasn't sure what happened, but now that I see you've been having problems... do you still have my commission information and whatnot? If you get some kind of e-mail going, you can send to me at gift.of.inspiration@gmail.com. My old e-mail was giving me too much trouble.
